Litter Pickers
A litter-free school (and of course litter-free routes to school!) is a good indicator of a school’s commitment to caring for the environment, which is an important value of sustainable development. It’s quite difficult to imagine a school that is conscious about its responsibilities to the environment yet they allow litter to go unchallenged. Nobody likes to be near litter – it diminishes our lives and shouts out to all who see it: “Nobody cares”. Litter is one of the simplest ways to show children the impact our behaviour has on the environment. It is also one of the easiest to do something about in the school setting.
That is why we are so proud of the Litter Pickers that we have here at St. Patrick’s. They work tirelessly everyday scouring the playgrounds, entrance areas, corridors and the field for any litter. Of course, their health and safety is paramount so they are never without their specialist gloves, grabbers, sacks and high viz-vests.
They are an amazing bunch of conscientious children who always keep smiling regardless of the weather. They delivered an assembly about the importance of not dropping litter and they were recently issued with special sunshine badges for their hard work.
